LALIT is a Sanskrit word meaning playful, desirable. It is also the name of a newly formed group of musicians in the Pioneer Valley that started as the result of an idea by Robert Markey (sitar). Included in the group are Burrie Jenkins (guitar), Rob Terreden (percussion), and Jon Weeks (horns and woodwinds). The group formed in Spring 2009 , and began to assemble a body of music that consists of eastern and western influenced styles . While the instrumentation lends itself to a large number of more traditional Indian Ragas, complete with "alap" intros and energetic "jor" improvisations , there can be anything from a Jazz standard " Afro Blue" (w/ sitar contrapuntal improvisations against the melody) to a straight up celtic jig thrown in . The group also does original compositions in both eastern and western song forms. The idea is, "to see what can be" as stated by sitarist Robert Markey . The essence is in effect "limitlessness".
