River of Lights Lantern Parade

Aug 11, 2012

The Lantern Parade happened August 11th after the Block Party.

Watch a video of last year's parade here.

The Turners Falls River of Lights Lantern Parade will take place at 8 pm on August 11th along the riverside bike path directly following the Turners Falls Block Party.   Paraders will begin the route at Avenue A and 5th Street, walk to the bike path, take the bike path along the canal to Unity Park, cross the parking lot and end in the green area by the river.

The parade began last year as the winning proposal of RiverCulture’s Turners Falls Producer’s Series, a project aimed to help artists and those with an idea for an event get them off the ground.  The request for ideas is very general with the specification that the event or project must happen in downtown Turners Falls and reinvent or reimagine a location or downtown space.

River of Lights -a project by Kathryn Greenwood Swanson, Hunter Greenwood Swanson and Alexis Arcaro- is a lantern parade in Turners Falls along the CT River and aims to celebrate the river and the beautiful waterfront as one of Turners Fall's greatest assets.  The parade will march along the riverside bike path with lanterns and traveling music with a grand finale of the release of three Thai-style lanterns to float high into the night sky. This is done every year in Chiang Mai, Thailand and is said to take all of one's demons and bad luck and carry them away.

Those wanting to march in the parade can decorate their own lanterns at a giant lantern making party the day before the Block Party on August 10th from 3pm til dusk at the riverside picnic area at Unity Park.  Participants are encouraged to bring a picnic or food to grill.  Blank lanterns are $5/ea and decorating supplies will be provided for free. Participants are welcome to bring their own lanterns/soda bottle lanterns to the party to decorate if they don't want to buy one.  A lantern decorating station will also be set up the day of the Block Party.

River of Lights is supported by a grant from Turners Falls RiverCulture. RiverCulture works to create a vibrant and connected community through innovative partnerships and cultural programming. Email Lisa with questions at riverculture@montague-ma.gov
