Ambiguities 7pm

The Ambiguities’ sound is hard to pin down, making attempts to categorize it ambiguous at best. Daniel Oppenheimer, in The Valley Advocate described their music as “eccentric, cerebral, and eerily beautiful.”  Of their debut album he wrote: “If Beck had more of an Apocalyptic bent, he might produce a record that sounds something like this.” April Boyle wrote in Northeast Performer that their songs are “intricately orchestrated  pieces that require several spins to fully appreciate their complexity...there’re always new things to hear.”

The current Ambiguous ensemble, lead singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter Daniel Hales, bassist Leo Hwang-Carlos, keyboard player and vocalist Carrie Ferguson, drummer Steven Freiman and harmony vocalist Hilary Weiner, came together in 2004.   The Ambiguities continue to “rock and unrock...audiences  throughout the Pioneer Valley”(Bill Waltz, Conduit magazine) and  are hard at work on their forthcoming disk, Invitation To The Voyage. http://ambig.org/

I-Ganic 8:30pm

Selecting the latest and classic sounds from the U.K. to Jamaica: Roots, Dub, Dancehall, Steppas... I-Ganic uses a series of effect processors, sirens and vibe enhancing sounds to produce a one of a kind, bass heavy, echo blurred dub mix, live on the sound system.

Residing in Western Mass with roots in Puerto Rico, I-Ganic began spinning records in the mid ‘80s at the age of 13. Inspired by the sound system culture of Jamaica, I-Ganic played parties and opened for local reggae bands. By the late ‘90s, he had developed his signature style of layering digital effects over a mix of top-shelf selections of the latest UK and Jamaican Roots, Steppas, Dancehall, and Dub. Having added more equipment and a much larger collection of vinyl, I-Ganic Sound System is the Pioneer Valley’s Number One Reggae Sound System.  http://www.iganicsoundsystem.com/main.htm

Pat & Tex LaMountain with Deerfield River Junction 7 pm

Acoustic guitars accompanied by cello, electric bass, guitar and three female vocalists.

Pat & Tex have been writing and singing together since 1975. There's something about a life on the road that hints of romance and intrigue. It appeals on many levels. But it doesn't always pay for college or the mortgage. So now that Tex has received his first social security check, we're chomping at the bit to put some more of that adventure into life -- with music as the boat that we hope will take us on some more fascinating detours from the 'normal'. People, we have found, will come out of the woodwork and find you if you put yourself out there a little bit. We have loved that. So we are reaching out and finding all sorts of crazy scenes that make us laugh and cry. Sometimes at the same time. We are not too old for that. We're different. We're more balanced and less crazy ourselves so we can enjoy the revelry without fearing getting lost in it. We also see the power of music and we're clear we need to guide our own use of that power to do only what is helpful in the world. So if you want to play in that arena, come along for the ride. Enjoy. Welcome!

WORD=OBJECT

Thru June 1
LOOT found+made 62 Avenue A in Turners Falls

Discover five artists whose work crosses the boundary between word and object. Paintings defaced by their artist with spray-painted slogans, interactive loose-leaf books made of plastic and vellum, posters where word enhances image and image enhances word, and hand-made books where the paper gives body to the poetry and the poetry breath to the paper. ASIZ Industries, Meghan Dewar, Christopher Janke, Jess Mynes, and Betsy Wheeler: these artists explore what exists between ink and page, between eye and ear, between word and object.

Eilen Jewell + Lost Straitjackets

June 2, 8 pm, Shea Theater

It is the battered cassette jammed in the tape deck of the getaway car, the music Ida Lupino cues up on the roadhouse jukebox as she counts the till after close. This is Queen of the Minor Key by Eilen Jewell, a smart cookie with a heart of burnished gold and enough stories to keep even the rowdiest crowd hanging on her every word. Though its long shadows and dark corners make her kingdom feel intimate, her sovereign domain stretches as far as the imagination. Its denizens seek refuge in padded rooms, abandoned automobiles... and strong spirits. They defend their territory by any means necessary: weird voodoo, sawed-off shotguns, broken bottles.  More here.

His careful composition and ability to capture the decisive moment breathes life into these tableaus.
